Finally, I had a weekend off and how did I choose to spend it… on Route 66 of course! I’ve been obsessed with the Route for the past 5 years. I love going to the little towns along the way and seeing the old relics of the past. So anytime I need to clear my head, I head out to here.
Of all the stops along the way, there was one place that I really, really wanted to go. That was the Palm Grill Cafe in Atlanta, IL. The last time I grabbed a meal here, they had just opened up. I was itching to get back.
It is a restored diner from the 1930s. The Cafe had been closed for a while and it wasn’t until a few years ago that the town of Atlanta purchased the building and brought it back to life.
It’s great because they have up in a lot of work restoring the old grill. the counter, the tables, and even vintage signs have all been reproduced to give a feeling of what it was like in its heyday.
The best part is that the food is absolutely delicious. The last time I came here and ordered a blue plate special turkey dinner. So yummy! The only thing they didn’t recreate is the prices. I want to pay $0.30 for a cup of coffee.
This time we ordered the meatloaf sandwich. Good but not what I was expecting. Think meatloaf slices between two pieces of white bread. But the star here was the apple pie a la mode. Oh so good. You can tell that these are homemade pies filled with love and goodness. Mom and I wanted to split a slice and ended up fighting who would get the last bite.
The food is definitely worth the 50+ mile trip down. There are not too many places with the history and good cheap eats left. So Atlanta is definitely one of my favs to stop and grab a bite after a long day on the road.
